The Four Freedoms of Cryptocurrency
While reading the WordPress Mission it occurred to me that the manifesto for many and cryptocurrency projects could be that of “Democratising Money”. It got me wondering if anyone had drafted a version of the four freedoms for #Cryptocurrency?
Reworking the four freedoms as used by WordPress, I’ll take an initial stab…
Democratising Money: The Four Freedoms of Blockchain Based Cryptocurrency
- The freedom to use the digital assets and underlying blockchain, for any purpose within the limitations of the protocol.
- The freedom to study how the protocol works, and use any software or technology to interact with it, within a potentially dynamic consensus-governed ruleset.
- The freedom to spend and distribute digital assets under your control along with copies of any associated free license software components.
- The freedom to distribute copies of your modified “wallet” software, network nodes, and digital assets giving the community a chance to benefit from your changes.

Useful?
I realise that this is likely oversimplified and it may not cover every cryptocurrency, blockchain project or use case. Nonetheless I found it to be an interesting thought experiment. I’d definitely be interested to hear of any potential improvements, or places that these freedoms fall down for real world application.
