Today I discovered there is a team working on creating a decentralised blockchain database system called IPDB (Interplanetary Database). They have stated they are building the project with a focus on strong governance, decentralised control and universal accessibility. If the economic model works for storing larger amounts of data then this could be the database system that many in the blockchain world have been hoping for.
This is a separate but complementary project to the IPFS (Interplanetary File System). They’ve taken on the goal of replacing HTTP which is pretty much the web as many people know it today. The idea is that all of the data can be stored and served by nodes around the world with economic incentives provided by Filecoin. All files within the IPFS system would come with cryptographic assurance that they are what they say they are as well as additional version history and de-duplication functionality.
Together we could be witnessing the birth of a new decentralised web stack of the future for launching websites, apps, and beyond.
